Melting Pot

Recently the fantastical Roommate, for whom I have lots of love in my heart, took me to the Melting Pot.

Fondue and I have a long love affair. My mother used to make Welsh Rarebit (or Welsh Rabbit, as I used to call it), which is basically melted cheese, beer, and bread in a bowl – hello. My cousin and I used to have a weekly chocolate fondue/Top Chef date. It’s not a party if there’s not fondue, in my opinion. So the Melting Pot has been high on the list of dream dates the Roommie and I have long been wanting to go on.

So Monday night we went. It was just us girls but we ate like men. We went all out and did the four course meal. The Melting Pot in Albany is like a maze. It’s dark and romantic with lots of corners (“for making out!” according to my Roomate). She and I were the only platonic couple there. But that’s okay. We came for the food, not the ambiance.

First was cheese fondue with Reisling and mustard. On their own white wine, mustard, and cheese are staples in my diet, so together they were melty bliss.

We dipped bread, cauliflower, and sausage into our cheese fondue. Next we had a salad. It was pretty good, but if felt sort of silly, like, okay, every meal NEEDS a salad so we’ll just throw one in there. No biggie, I like my greens.

We weren’t sure what to expect for the main course, since our server kept talking about “cooking” our food ourselves. We choose a selection of meats (tomato ravioli, NY Strip, filet mignon, chicken, lobster tail, shrimp, and kielbasa) and our server brought us veggies and a bowl of broth which we heated on our table.

We literally cooked our food in the pot for several minutes before putting it on our plate and topping it with various condiments. Very tasty!

I was extremely full by the end of the main course. It seemed counter-intuitive (how can eating small chunks of food make you so full) but when you stop and think about it, you get served a lot. I was really excited about dessert, though, so I sucked it up and ordered. We decided on a chocolate fondue with caramel that was flambeed at our table with some liqueur. We were served bananas and strawberries, cheesecake, pound cake, brownies, marshmallows, and rice krispies. I liked the fruit the best — who doesn’t get excited for a chocolate-covered strawberry?

It was a massive amount of food, but everything tasted so good. An average-sized gal like myself would do fine with just the first course and dessert. For you ladies in the Albany area, every Thursday night is Ladies Night Out with cheese fondue, salad, and dessert for just $20. In October, there are two special LNOs, with the help from Mary Kay and Estee Lauder. Find out more details here. I’ll be there on October 15 for their Breast Cancer research fundraiser!
