“Governor Patterson has declared a swine flu emergency around here.”
“Oh, yeah, ya think?”
This was the conversation just had between the news guy on the TV and my sarcastic roommate. She and I have been at home since Sunday with the flu. Swine or other, it doesn’t really matter. It sucks. I am not the sort of person who likes to sit at home and do nothing. And yes, it does seem timely that I got the flu after my recent rant words about the flu vaccine, but I think my current sicky situation has more to do with the fact that I work 6 days a week with children, I don’t get as much sleep as I should, and lately I’ve really been putting the “fest” in “Oktoberfest.”
So here we are. It’s been an uneventful week, made up mainly of tissues, Theraflu, and trips to the pharmacy made by The Boyfriend (who has miraculously escaped the flu, pig or other). There has been a lot of this:
Re-watching Season 1 of 30 Rock. You should, too.
And a couple of these:
Good ol’ Holmes helped me through these boring days. I highly recommend these short stories for a quick and entertaining read in between naps. (Say hi to Sid!).
Tons of these:
A nose’s best friend.
A few of these:
You know you do it, too.
This:
That would be checking out class schedules online while eating a popsicle in bed. (Say hi to my room!)
And a bunch of these:
Best $1.99 I ever spent.
I hope you are not in the same sorry state. And if you came looking for a recipe, I do have one for you:
No-Flu-For-You Stew
- Hot and Sour soup from your favorite Chinese take-out restaurant
- Homemade chicken soup with rice, made by your concerned mother and delivered with some care and admonishment (“I told you to get the flu shot! I hope you girls are resting up and drinking lots of fluids!”).
- Jell-O for sore throats
- More tea than you ever thought one person could drink in a week
- Ghostbusters 1 and 2
- A fleece blanket
Combine the first four ingredients with your favorite medication and repeat as often as necessary. Cover sick person with the fleece blanket, pop in the DVDs, and let sit for about a week.
Soon we’ll be back to regularly scheduled programming, but for now I bid you Gesundheit.
