Vaccinate at Your Own Risk

Everyone is getting sick or paranoid about it, so I think this is a timely topic:

NY Rescinds It’s Flu Shot Mandate for State Health Care Workers

Health care workers around here were all up in arms because the state was requiring the flu shot. Apparently the end to this mandate does not come from their protest, but from the fact that New York just doesn’t have enough vaccine to go around, and they want to save it for at-risk groups, children and the elderly.

I am not a fan of the flu shot and have not gotten one, despite my mother’s insistence (I know she is particularly concerned for my well-being, but the only winter she got a flu shot, she came down with pneumonia.)  If I were a state worker, I would be opposed to mandated flu shots, as well.

What do you think? There are so many opinions out there and this fall and winter in particular, it’s a hot topic.

I really don’t know…I actually haven’t been vaccinated either. But they’re making it such a big deal, it makes people scared.

If you’re in a high risk category, its totally worth it. For H1N1 that means people with respiratory issues, and college students. For the seasonal flu, that would be the elderly. In both cases: healthcare workers. Should it be mandated? Nah. Is it a good idea if you’re at risk. Yes. People poo-poo the flu shots, but the science is pretty solid.

I’m with you on the flu shots. I refuse to get them even though my work provides them for free. The flu shot only covers a few strains out of hundreds and the h1n1 was just thrown together and given en masse to the public- I’m not putting that crap in my body. I take lots of tasty herbal antivirals.
